Get a new perspective on how the western part of the Amazon is changing and the implications it may have for the Amazon and its peoples. Join us with a University of Toronto geographer that has spent close to twenty years studying the area, including a 1,000 km trip down the Ucayali River by boat.
In the Peruvian Amazon, Dr. Christian Abizaid studies rural livelihoods, their prospects for conservation and development, and how rural peoples deal with environmental change. The Amazon has been front and center in the news over past months—we have all seen alarming images of fires and deforestation in Brazil. Sadly, we don’t hear much about what is going on in the Peruvian Amazon. A large-scale research project that seeks to contribute to the understanding of this region is the Peruvian Amazon Rural Livelihoods and Poverty (PARLAP) project (for more details please check: https://parlap.geog.mcgill.ca/).
