Author Alex Gino recently announced their popular book George was misnamed. The use of the character’s given name, instead of their chosen name of Melissa does not further the goal of the book to create acceptance for gender identities. They are encouraging everyone, including public libraries, to modify the covers of their copies to reflect the new title Melissa’s Story. Durham Libraries and PFLAG are participating in a #SharpieActivism event where we will permanently modify the book covers with black sharpies to reflect the new title.
