Join us for our first Awareness Pin Two Day Workshop with Janet Dugan

Session 1 (up to 3 h
ours)
Participants will create an Awareness pin using the one
needle flat stitch method of bead
embroidery. Participants will
choose the type of pin, the colour of beads and backing for the
p
roject. Two or three rows will be beaded around the cabochon to complete th
e first part of the pin
making process. Next, the project and bac
king will be cut out, a pin attached and then glued.
Session 2 (up to 3 hours)
Participants will learn how to u
se the whip stitch method of edging to bring the back and front of
the project together.

n Changing Sky Designs Janet is of mixed heritage. Her Spirit name in Ojibw
e is Onsek Keeshigo (kwe), meaning Changing Sky (woman) Janet is a proud me
mber of Munsee Delaware FN (Leni Lenape) Wolf Clan. Her maternal Grandmothe
r was a member of Alderville FN, and her maternal Great Grandmother was a m
ember of Akwesasne FN, Turtle Clan. The fallout from the residential school
experience for Indigenous people has affected her family tremendously. Her
Great Grandmothers were best friends during their time at residential scho
ol. Her Maternal Grandmother attended day school in Alderville FN, and her
Mother was detained in the Mohawk Institute as a young girl along with her
siblings. Janet began her journey with seed beads in 2018 when she founded
the “Red Dress Pin Project”. She has made over 350 red dress pins with all
proceeds going to organizations who support Indigenous Women, Girls and Two
Spirit who are at risk of becoming murdered or missing. More than $4,000 h
as been donated to date. Beading is an important part of her healing journe
y. Janet believes that beading is medicine.
